Immigration & Residency in Spain – Main Guide

NIE Spain – 2025 Guide to the Foreigners' Identification Number

The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is your unique foreigner identification number in Spain. Whether you're planning to buy property, open a bank account, register a business, or apply for residency, your NIE is the first step. This complete 2025 guide explains what the NIE is, why it's required, and how to apply – both from within Spain and from abroad.

Quick Summary: The NIE is not a residency permit. It is a tax identification number issued to foreigners for legal and economic activity in Spain.

What Is an NIE Number?

NIE stands for Número de Identificación de Extranjero – the Foreigner Identification Number. It’s a personal, unique number assigned by the Spanish government to any non-Spanish citizen who carries out legal or financial activity in Spain.

It appears on most legal documents and is necessary for both residents and non-residents alike.

Common Uses of an NIE

  • ✔️ Buying or selling property
  • ✔️ Opening a bank account
  • ✔️ Applying for residency (TIE card)
  • ✔️ Signing employment contracts
  • ✔️ Paying taxes or registering a business
  • ✔️ Getting utility contracts in your name

Who Needs an NIE in Spain?

Almost all foreigners who plan to stay or invest in Spain need an NIE. This includes:

  • ✅ EU and non-EU citizens buying property
  • ✅ Foreigners moving to Spain long-term
  • ✅ Digital nomads, freelancers, and entrepreneurs
  • ✅ Students and seasonal workers
  • ✅ Investors and pensioners

Understanding the NIE Number in Spain

Spain only assigns one NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) per person — a unique identification number that never changes. Whether you apply as a non-resident or later become a resident, your NIE number remains the same. The differences lie in how it's documented and used.

✔️ NIE Certificate for Non-Residents

Issued on a white A4 sheet, this document confirms your NIE number and is used for activities like buying property, paying taxes, or opening a Spanish bank account. It does not grant residency rights.

✔️ Residency Card for Residents (Green Certificate or TIE Card)

If you become a resident in Spain, your same NIE number will appear on either a green EU residency certificate (for EU/EEA nationals) or on a TIE card (for non-EU citizens). The number never changes.

How to Apply for Your NIE

You can apply for your NIE at a Policía Nacional immigration office in Spain. Appointments are required and forms must be submitted in Spanish.

  • ✔️ Proof of reason for applying (property sale, job offer, etc.)
