Non-Lucrative Visa Spain (NLV) – 2026 Guide

Apply Through Our Secure Portal

Spain’s Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) is a proven route for non-EU citizens to obtain Spanish residency without working. It’s often described as a “retirement visa”, but in practice it’s a financial independence residency route — popular with retirees, families relocating for lifestyle or education, and applicants with passive income or savings who want a clear pathway to renewals and long-term residency.

“The Non-Lucrative Visa isn’t just for retirees — it’s increasingly chosen by families and financially independent applicants relocating to Spain for quality of life.”

What Is the Non-Lucrative Visa?

The Non-Lucrative Visa is a Spanish residency authorisation for non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals who want to live in Spain without carrying out any professional or economic activity. It does not require an investment or property purchase. Instead, your approval depends on three things being done properly: financial evidence, visa-compliant health insurance, and a correctly prepared file that matches your consulate’s expectations.

Who Is the Non-Lucrative Visa For?

The NLV is typically suitable for:

  • Retirees with pensions, savings, or investment income
  • Financially independent applicants with passive income or capital
  • Families relocating for education, healthcare, or lifestyle
  • Applicants planning a longer-term residency strategy (renewals → long-term residence)

Planning to work remotely? The NLV is designed for residence without professional activity. If you intend to work for a foreign company or clients, the Digital Nomad Visa may be the more suitable route.

Requirements for the Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV)

While requirements can vary slightly by consulate, most applications follow the same framework. The most common delays and refusals come from document validity windows, apostille/legalisation issues, and financial proof that isn’t packaged clearly.

  • Apply from outside Spain: The application is submitted at the Spanish Consulate/Embassy in your country of legal residence (or their designated provider where applicable).
  • Financial means: Evidence you can support yourself (and any dependants) without working in Spain.
  • Health insurance: Private health insurance meeting consular requirements for full coverage in Spain.
  • Clean criminal record: Criminal record certificate(s) from your country of origin and any country where you lived in the last 5 years, properly legalised/apostilled and translated.
  • Medical certificate: Confirming you do not suffer from diseases that could pose serious public health implications under the International Health Regulations (2005), presented in the format your consulate accepts.
  • Valid passport: Full copy, generally with at least 1 year validity and sufficient blank pages.
  • Translations & legalisation: Foreign public documents usually need sworn translation and apostille/legalisation unless an exemption applies.
  • Fees: Government fees (often referenced as Modelo 790 / código 052 for the authorisation step) and any consulate-specific visa handling fees.

Important: Many refusals and delays happen due to missing apostilles, expired documents, incorrect certificate formats, or weak financial packaging. We confirm exactly what your consulate expects during the eligibility check and consultation.

Financial Means & IPREM (2026 Snapshot)

The NLV financial requirement is calculated using IPREM (Indicador Público de Renta de Efectos Múltiples), the official Spanish index used for immigration thresholds. Using a commonly referenced monthly IPREM figure of €600/month for 2026, the practical thresholds are typically:

  • Main applicant: 400% of IPREM = €2,400/month€28,800/year
  • Each dependant: +100% of IPREM = €600/month → +€7,200/year per dependant
Example householdApprox. annual threshold (2026)
Single applicant€28,800/year
Applicant + 1 dependant€36,000/year
Applicant + 2 dependants€43,200/year

We help you package your financial evidence (bank statements, pensions, investments, rental income, dividends, etc.) into a format that is clear, credible, and aligned to consular expectations.

Mandatory Health Insurance for the NLV

Health insurance is a core approval requirement and one of the most common reasons applications are refused. Consulates frequently reject applications due to policies with co-payments (“copago”), waiting periods, or certificate wording that doesn’t match requirements.

  • Issued by an insurer authorised to operate in Spain
  • Full coverage in Spain (not travel insurance)
  • No co-payments
  • No waiting periods that restrict essential care
  • Valid for the full intended residence period

Spanish Health Insurance (Sanitas policies)

For applicants who want a strong Spanish insurer option (including Sanitas), we recommend Spanish Health Insurance for visa-compliant policies and certificates.

247 Expat Insurance (visa-compliant options)

For expat-focused guidance and multiple insurer options, we recommend 247 Expat Insurance for visa-compliant private healthcare policies aligned to consulate expectations.

Tip: Don’t purchase a policy until you’re confident it meets your consulate’s exact requirements. We validate insurance compliance as part of the portal-led process.

NLV Application Timeline

Processing times vary by consulate, but many applications complete within 4–10 weeks once submitted. Key milestones typically include:

  • Application submitted at your Spanish consulate
  • Decision issued (often within 1–2 months)
  • Collect the visa and enter Spain within the visa validity window
  • Within 30 days of arrival: apply for your TIE card

Family Applications & Renewals

Can I apply with my family?

Yes. You can apply as a family unit (spouse and dependent children). You must meet higher financial thresholds and provide additional documents, usually apostilled/legalised and officially translated.

Can I renew the NLV?

Yes. The first authorisation is typically granted for 1 year, followed by renewals of 2 years and then a further 2 years. After 5 years of continuous legal residence, you may apply for long-term (permanent) residence.

Renewals require that you continue meeting financial and insurance requirements and demonstrate genuine residence in Spain (commonly linked to spending more than 183 days per year in Spain).

FAQs – Non-Lucrative Visa Spain

Can I work remotely for a foreign company on the NLV?

The NLV is designed for residence without professional activity. Remote work can create compliance risk depending on your profile. We assess your situation during eligibility and advise whether the Digital Nomad Visa is a better fit.

How long is the initial Non-Lucrative Visa valid for?

The initial authorisation is typically granted for one year. You may then renew for two years and later for a further two years, provided you continue meeting the requirements.

Do I need proof of accommodation in Spain before applying?

Many consulates request proof of accommodation (such as a rental contract, property deed, or suitable long-term booking). We confirm what your consulate expects and how to present it correctly.

What health insurance is required for the NLV?

Most consulates expect comprehensive private health insurance from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain, typically with no co-payments and no waiting periods that restrict essential care, valid for the intended residence period.

Can I include adult children?

Adult children may qualify only in specific dependency scenarios. This usually requires clear evidence of financial dependency and supporting documentation aligned with consular expectations.

What happens if my application is refused?

Many refusals relate to documentation or evidence issues. We can review the decision and advise next steps, which may include an appeal strategy or a corrected re-application plan depending on timelines.
