Immigration & Residency in Spain – Main Guide

Spanish ID Documents Explained – NIE, TIE, and DNI

When moving to Spain, one of the first things you’ll encounter is the range of identification documents. From the NIE number to the TIE residency card and the Spanish DNI, it’s easy to get confused. This guide breaks down what each ID is, who needs it, how to obtain it, and how they all work together in 2025.

At a glance:
NIE = Foreigners’ Tax ID Number • TIE = Foreigners’ ID Card • DNI = Spanish National ID (only for citizens)

Can I Work in Spain with Only a NIE?

No — having a NIE number alone is not enough to legally work in Spain.

🔴 Non-EU Citizens

To work in Spain, you must have all of the following:

  • ✅ A valid residence and work permit (such as a Digital Nomad Visa, Work Visa, or Student Visa with work rights)
  • ✅ A TIE card proving legal residence
  • ✅ A Social Security Number from Spain

Important: The NIE is simply an identification number. It does not grant the right to live or work in Spain on its own.

🟢 EU / EEA / Swiss Citizens

You can work legally in Spain without a TIE, but you still need:

  • ✅ A NIE number for identification and tax purposes
  • ✅ Registration as a resident EU citizen in Spain (Certificado de Registro)
  • ✅ A Spanish Social Security Number to work

Note: EU nationals do not need a visa, but must complete Spanish registration to access public services and employment.

What Is an NIE Number?

The Número de Identificación de Extranjero (NIE) is a unique identification number assigned to foreigners in Spain. It is required for almost any legal, tax, or property transaction — from opening a bank account to buying a house or registering with Social Security.

  • 📌 Issued on white A4 paper
  • 📌 Lifetime number – doesn’t change or expire
  • 📌 May be assigned even if you don’t live in Spain
  • 📌 Doesn’t grant residency on its own

What Is a TIE?

The Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (TIE) is a physical residency card issued to non-EU citizens who hold a valid visa or residency permit. It includes your NIE number, photo, type of permit, and biometric data.

  • 📌 Mandatory for all non-EU residents
  • 📌 Comes in credit card format
  • 📌 Must be renewed in line with your residence permit
  • 📌 Issued after arriving in Spain with a long-term visa

What Is a DNI?

The Documento Nacional de Identidad (DNI) is Spain’s national identity card, issued to Spanish citizens only. Foreign residents, even with permanent residency, do not get a DNI unless they acquire Spanish nationality.

  • 📌 Exclusive to Spanish nationals
  • 📌 Required for voting, passports, and citizen services
  • 📌 Different format and purpose from TIE or NIE
