Immigration & Residency in Spain – Main Guide

Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) Spain – Guide

Spain’s Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) is one of the most popular ways for non-EU citizens to obtain Spanish residency — without needing to work. It’s ideal for retirees, and those who want to live legally in Spain while enjoying its lifestyle, safety, and healthcare system. Below, our residency specialists explain everything you need to know to apply for the NLV successfully.

"The Non-Lucrative Visa is not just for retirees — it’s
increasingly popular with families, and
those taking a sabbatical or relocating for lifestyle reasons."

What Is the Non-Lucrative Visa?

The Non-Lucrative Visa is a long-term residency visa designed for non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals who want to live in Spain without working. It requires that applicants have sufficient income or savings to support themselves and their family members while living in Spain. You cannot carry out any professional activity while on this visa, neither in Spain or remotely.

Who Is the Non-Lucrative Visa For?

This visa is suited to:

  • Retirees with pensions or savings
  • Individuals with independent passive income
  • Families relocating for lifestyle, health, or education reasons
  • People seeking long-term stays with the intention of later converting to another visa type

Requirements for the Non-Lucrative Visa

To qualify, you must demonstrate the following:

    • Who it’s for: Non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals (and eligible family) who want to live in Spain without doing any work or professional activity.
    • Financial Means: Show you can support yourself (and any dependants) without working. The requirement is 400% of IPREM for the main applicant, plus 100% of IPREM for each dependant.
For 2026, IPREM is shown as €600/month, so the practical thresholds are: €2,400/month for the applicant + €600/month per dependant. Over 12 months, that’s €28,800/year (single), €36,000/year (applicant + 1 dependant), or €43,200/year (applicant + 2 dependants).
    • Private Health Insurance: You must have public or private health insurance arranged with an insurer authorised to operate in Spain, covering you for the entire period of intended residence.
    • Clean Criminal Record: Provide a criminal record certificate from your country of origin and any country where you’ve lived in the last 5 years (covering offences recognised under Spanish law).
    • Medical Certificate: Provide a medical certificate confirming you do not suffer from any disease that could pose serious public health implications under the International Health Regulations (2005).
    • Valid Passport: A full copy of your passport/travel document recognised by Spain, with at least 1 year validity.
    • Apply from outside Spain: The application is submitted in person at the Spanish Consulate/Embassy in your place of legal residence (or via their designated external provider where applicable) — you can’t “switch onto” an NLV while you’re in Spain as a tourist.
    • Translations & Legalisation: Foreign public documents generally need sworn translation into Spanish (or the co-official language where you apply) and must be legalised or apostilled unless an exemption applies.
    • Fees (Tasas): You must pay the applicable government fee for the process (commonly referenced as Modelo 790, código 052 for the initial authorisation step), plus any consulate-specific visa handling fees.
    • After approval & arrival: If granted, you typically must collect the visa within 1 month of notification, enter Spain within the visa validity window (up to 3 months), and then apply for your TIE card within 1 month of entry. The initial non-lucrative residence authorisation is for 1 year, starting from your date of entry.
  • Private Health Insurance: You must have comprehensive, zero-copayment health insurance from a Spanish provider that covers the duration of your stay.
  • Clean Criminal Record: You’ll need a police clearance certificate from your country of residence issued within the last 3 months.
  • Medical Certificate: A doctor must confirm that you are free from contagious diseases as listed under international health regulations.
  • Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least 1 year and contain sufficient blank pages.

NLV Application Timeline

The process usually takes between 4–10 weeks depending on the consulate. You must apply from your home country (not from within Spain).

Key Milestones:

  • Application submitted at your Spanish consulate
  • Decision issued (usually within 1–2 months)
  • Collect your visa and enter Spain within the validity period
  • Within 30 days of arrival: apply for your TIE card (Foreigner Identity Card)

Can I Apply with a Family?

Yes. You can apply together as a family unit, including your spouse and dependent children. You must show sufficient income for all members and submit extra documentation such as marriage or birth certificates (apostilled and translated).

Can I Renew the NLV?

Yes. The first visa is granted for 1 year. You can renew for 2 years, and then again for another 2 years. After 5 years of continuous residence, you may apply for long-term or permanent residency.

For renewals, you must continue meeting the financial and health insurance requirements. You must also prove that you’ve spent more than 183 days per year in Spain.

Why the Non-Lucrative Visa Is So Popular

“The NLV is the ideal visa for those who want to settle in Spain
without the pressure of employment or investment requirements
— offering flexibility, lifestyle, and a long-term path to residency.”

Many non-EU nationals choose this route because:

  • It’s one of the few visas that allow **full residency without work or investment.**
  • It enables family members to come together on a single application.
  • You gain access to public schools and private healthcare in Spain.
  • After 5 years, you become eligible for long-term or permanent residency.
  • NLV holders often go on to modify to work visas, self-employment permits, or other options later.

Important Limitations to Consider

While the NLV is flexible, there are some rules to keep in mind:

  • You cannot work for a Spanish company or client while holding this visa.
  • You must spend over 183 days/year in Spain to maintain and renew your residency.
  • Frequent travel or extended stays outside Spain may impact your ability to renew.
  • You must continue meeting the income and insurance criteria for every renewal.
